A blessing in disguise

It doesn't feel like it now, and now might not be the best time to bring it up...but yesterday's loss to New England was a blessing in disguise for the Cleveland Browns. Fans don't want to hear that, and usually never think along those lines, but in this case, it's ok.

The Browns have a very important draft coming up. Like many drafts in the recent past, the Browns have holes to fill and good picks to help fill those spots. Browns fans have been waiting for a winner for a long time, but they will have to wait just a little longer.

This season is lost. Richardson was traded, Weeden flopped, and the team grabbed L's more than W's. The important thing as a fan is to realize the season is over, and plan ahead from here on out. Getting a meaningless win over New England yesterday would have done nothing but make their draft spot worse each round...they aren't making the playoffs this year after all.

People feel wins like that could carry over to next season, I disagree. I think the players are already motivated. I think the team already knows they can win if they have the requisite go get that talent. This team has a foundation, now it just needs more.

The foundation I referred to...Josh Gordon is an absolute star Wide Receiver, uncoverable at times. Jordan Cameron has come a long way, and has shown flashes of brilliance. The defense is rock steady with solid contributors at every level, just need more depth.

The Hoyer injury hurts in a few ways. For one, the team still isn't 100% sure he is the guy going forward. He looked good when he played, but the injury left a small amount to evaluate. Also, the injury will dent his off season and the growth he could get from a productive off season. He will still improve, but maybe not as much. The team needs to decide how early, if at all, they address QB in the draft.

The season is a wash, but it doesn't totally have to be. Bottom out some, get your draft picks, and keep building. Many of you don't trust the team to make the right picks, and I can't blame you, but you still have to try. Beating New England would have been meaningless, end of discussion...the draft coming up though, isn't.
