Well, I guess I won’t be picking BYU to advance very far in the NCAA tournament. It was confirmed late Tuesday night that the Cougars suspended sophomore center Brandon Davies for the rest of
the season for violating the university’s honor code. As of right now, it has not been disclosed what Davies did but it was not ‘criminal or academic in nature’. (Update - sources are reporting that Davies engaged in sex with his girlfriend)
All schools have an honor code; though let’s all have a good chuckle at how loosely most are enforced, just look at the two schools here. We’ve all heard stories of players doing things that never got them suspended or even reprimanded. Brigham Young is different though, they actually enforce their honor code even with a 6’9, 235lb center who averages 11.1 ppg and 6.2 rpg, playing on a team that is having one of the best seasons in school history at 27-2.
The honor code that the 20-year-old Davies violated looks something like this:
We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men…
As a matter of personal commitment, faculty, administration, staff, and students of Brigham Young University seek to demonstrate in daily living on and off campus those moral virtues encompassed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and will
Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
Now, read that list again, and count how many you’ve broken in this day alone. I’m up to about 4 and the day isn’t even over yet. I remember what college was like and I was probably violating about all of them, everyday, and be honest with yourself, so were you.
Davies allegedly did nothing that 95% of other student-athletes could have even been sat for. For all we know, he could have started to grow a beard and never got permission. You think I’m joking, read this.
As much as I think these rules may be a little 'Charlie Sheen', it's hard to feel too sad for Davies,
when you agree to attend BYU you know what you're signing up for, though I'm not sure how Jim McMahon made it through...
