Hey Philadelphia, wipe that smile off your face, who do you think you are, New York?
Philly sports fans, no matter how well things are going, always have that feeling of doubt lurking somewhere in their soul, they can’t help it, they're born with it, but with this Cliff Lee signing, it’s no where to be found…odd.
There’s all these ridiculous pictures and nicknames surfacing, talk of it being the greatest rotation, and the team winning 100+ games. But wait, this is Philadelphia, they’re a bunch of losers, they can’t build a dynasty.
And for the record, they haven’t. One player does not a team make and as I recall, they didn’t even make it to the World Series last year and they had ‘the best rotation in baseball’. And if my memory serves me, when they did have Cliff Lee, they didn’t win the series, so why do they think they can now?
On paper this looks like a World Series winner, even Vegas agrees. Wasn’t there another team that looked good on paper that was suppose to go to its championship game? All the experts and Vegas, projected that the Cowboys would make it to the Super Bowl, and as they all said ‘they couldn’t not win with that talent’.
And how’s the experiment in South Beach going? They started off barely above .500 and the players looked lost; granted they appear to have gotten their act together but it’s a long season.
And it’s a long season in baseball too. And the Phillies had holes last year that were exposed, like Ryan Howard can’t really hit anything other than a fastball, though if you’ve been watching him for any period of time, you knew this.
The Phillies are also one of the oldest teams in the league, literally, even if you remove the outlier that is Jamie Moyer. Their Big 3 in the hitting department - Utley, Howard, and Rollins – all are in their 30’s.
I had a Mets fan tell me that he’s guesses he doesn’t have to watch baseball this year.
If anything, it’s the best time to watch baseball if you’re a fan of the NL, why would you want to miss when the Phillies start imploding on themselves and the fans turn on the team.
And I didn't even mention the lackluster bullpen and the headcase that is Brad Lidge.
Don’t pencil the Phils into the World Series just yet, lets see how all these egos can mesh, especially when Cole Hamels is the 4th starter, in the last year of his deal.
