Offsides with Christina

I’m a Pennsylvania native (but I'm not a Steelers or Eagles fan!) and have lived in the area for a couple years now. When I'm not working, I'm coaching swimming. If you want ask me a question, or don't like my blog, or just want to give me some coaching advice, I'd love to hear from you!

State of the AFC

Week 10 kicked off last night with the first Thursday game, let's see how the AFC is doing at the halfway point.

AFC East

Mark Sanchez sophomore slump hasn’t really hit, and it looks as though he’s going to have the same if not a better season then last.  The Jets are still all about their defense and running the ball, which is great that LT decided to find his youth.  And even though they’re tied with the Patriots for first in the east, I have more confidence in the Pats coming out on top; despite that strange 34-14 loss to the Browns last week.  We’ll chalk it up to Mangini wanting to stick it to his old boss.  But the Patriots seem to keep winning despite trading away good veterans and getting no body's to play amazingly well. And have no fear Bills fans, Buffalo will win a game, maybe even two.  The last two weeks the Bills have played their hearts out in two over-time losses, look for a possible win this week against Detroit.

AFC North

Despite Ben Roethlisberger's four game suspension, the Steelers have somehow managed to have the best record in the North.  The Steelers should have at least three losses, but the defense, with a healthy Troy Polamalu, looks like the defense that won the Super Bowl two years ago.  The Bengals however, look nothing like the team from last year.  You’d think adding Terrell Owens would have made the offense better, and it has, if all they wanted to do was throw the ball, but a defense might pick up on that.  They’re averaging less than 100 yards per game, and the defense is nothing to write home about; they rank near the bottom in every major defensive category.  Something’s wrong with Carson Palmer, he looks lifeless and is inconsistent, maybe he's sick of the drama in Cincy or maybe it's the weather...  either way, something will happen at the end of the season to shake up the Queen City.

AFC South

Hands down the AFC South is the best conference in the NFL.  All four teams have winning records with one game separating the top from the bottom.  It's a toss up who will win, year after year, the Colts have dominated the South thanks to that Manning fellow, however, he is only one man and can't play defense or catch the ball.  Indy seems to be losing a player a week, specifically receivers, but amazingly, the Colts are 2nd in pass yards and 3rd in total points and yards, but if you want to find the real weakness, it's the run game.  The Colts can't run the ball or stop the run.  And that's why if they happen to make the playoffs it'll be a first round exit.  Tennessee will win the division, and that was before they added Randy Moss to the line-up.

AFC West

The Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders have a better record than the San Diego Chargers.  Have no fear, the universe will right itself and the Chargers will once again come out on top, and if they don't, then goodbye Norv Turner.  But the lackluster start of the Chargers is no big surprise, what is a surprise are those pesky Raiders.  Don't be surprised if they manage to sneak into the playoffs and have a first-round upset.  It's amazing what happens when you get a decent quarterback and play defense.  And Bronco fans, I'm sorry you wasted a first-round draft pick on Tim Tebow, he's nice to look at but that's about it.  If Josh McDaniels has a job next year, expect to finish last again.
