UD downs Mount St. Mary?s in Season Opener

Even though his stat line (4 points on 2-9 shooting, 8 assists and 1 rebound) may not garner too much attention, freshman Juwan Staten’s play Saturday afternoon is exactly what this program has needed for some time.
A self-proclaimed “student of the game”, Staten is wise beyond his years. Against Mount St. Mary’s Staten effectively ran the offense, pushed the ball in transition and consistently found the open man. The style of play UD coach Brian Gregory employs needs someone of Staten’s caliber to be successful.
Saturday’s beneficiaries from Staten’s play were Devin Searcy and Paul Williams.
Searcy finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Williams ended with 14 on 6-10 shooting.
The Flyers first half play was understandably shaky considering the amount of new faces on the floor and the excitement inside UD Arena. Though in the second period, UD was able to better dictate the pace opening up the game and scoring in transition.
The defense is still a “process” according to Coach Gregory, which needs to improve quickly. It will take a few more games to be able to accurately gauge how good the team defense is but it’s clearly a point of emphasis.
The Flyers return to action Tuesday evening at UD Arena when they play host to Akron. Tip-off is at 9pm.
