What's going on with the missile?

The impossible has happened...twice in a row! Aroldis Chapman has blown his last 2 save attempts, spoiling wins by both Homer Bailey and Mat Latos. This is something most of us never thought would happen...Chapman became hittable!

I'm not sure why. His velocity is down, but by choice. He can still dial it up to 100, as we saw plenty during the Marlins series. He seems healthy, but I suppose we never really know for sure. The only things I can come up with seem simple, but could be the reason.

He doesn't seem to be going to the breaking ball as much. He seems to throw a lot of fastballs, but when you throw that fast, I can't blame anyone. He gets a lot of #1's called for him, and he never seems to shake them off. That fastball is what made his the Cuban Missile, not the Cuban Nibbler or the Cuban change up.

The other reason may be the biggest reason...he doesn't seem to scare hitters anymore. He was feared around baseball last season. Not just because of the threat of being hit by his pitch, the fear of humiliation! That fear seems to have gone elsewhere, ask the back up 3b and Catcher that sent him deep yesterday in the 9th. Baseball is a mental game in many respects, he seems to be lacking some of that mental edge he once possessed.

Is Chapman done, heck no! This happens to most every closer along the way. But what is most troubling is that he has become less threatening, which can be the difference between a 7th inning guy and a 9th inning guy. Some success will get him going again, but untill then, great starting pitching could continue to be wasted.

Meet the newest OSU verbal for 2014...

This article is from Bucknuts.com...Lonnie Johnson becomes the 8th member of the 2014 class...

Urban Meyer signed four outstanding wide receiver/slot receiver prospects in his 2013 recruiting class. But Meyer wants to sign at least two more in his 2014 class and maybe as many as four more.

Lonnie Johnson

At 6-foot-3 and 190-pounds, Johnson will give Urban Meyer some needed size in the Buckeyes' wide receiver core.

Today he landed one of those two to four receivers for his 2014 recruiting class and in Lonnie Johnson he has a very, very good one.

Johnson still needs to take care of everything in regards to the NCAA clearinghouse, but he has an entire year to do so and certainly providing he does the Buckeyes have another very talented athlete set to play for Meyer and company.

The 6-foot-3 and 190-pound Johnson caught 31 passes for 777 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns during his junior season. He also played running back and had 25 total touchdowns.

Johnson gives Meyer another offensive weapon with big play potential. He presents match-up problems for smaller defensive backs and has the ability to break tackles and take the ball to the house.

Meyer landed Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson, James Clark and Corey Smith in his 2013 recruiting class, but none of those players is taller than 6-foot-0. There are no wide receivers on the current roster taller than 6-foot-2, and one of the two that are 6-foot-2 is Chris Fields who is going into his senior season.

At 6-foot-3 and 190-pounds, Johnson adds size to the Buckeyes' wide receiver core along with outstanding athletic ability. While he isn't a 6-foot-5 or better type guy like Derek Kief, Dallis Todd, or Mark Andrews for example, he does have good length.

There are currently just six scholarship wide receivers on the roster. In addition to Fields, Devin Smith and Evan Spencer are headed into their junior seasons. So there is definitely a need for help at wide receiver in the Buckeyes' 2014 recruiting class and Johnson is the first with at least one more needed, and I think likely at least two more.

Now having said all of that, Johnson is also an outstanding safety prospect and the Buckeyes are looking for a couple of impact safety prospects for their 2014 recruiting class. Johnson has said he definitely prefers wide receiver and the OSU staff has recruited him for that position. But an eventual move to safety is absolutely a possibility.

Bottom line, Johnson has big-time athletic ability and good size, and could be an outstanding player for the Buckeyes on either side of the ball. He intercepted six passes during his junior season. Meyer and company will figure out the best spot for him once he gets to Ohio State.

Meyer is doing an outstanding job recruiting the Midwest and Johnson gives the Buckeyes another one of the top prospects in Big Ten country.

And with Johnson Meyer has taken another step in building an outstanding base to his 2014 recruiting class. Johnson joins offensive lineman Marcelys Jones (Cleveland, Ohio/Glenville), cornerback Damon Webb (Detroit, Mich./Cass Tech), offensive tackle Kyle Trout (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster), running back/athlete Parris Campbell (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary), defensive lineman Dylan Thompson (Lombard, Ill./Montini Catholic), athlete Sam Hubbard (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller) and linebacker Kyle Berger (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) in the Buckeyes' class.

As Meyer and his staff do a great job in Ohio and the Midwest, look for them to be able to concentrate also on the South and really the rest of the country as they load up for what projects to be a spectacular 2014 recruiting class.

OSU gets transfer from Ga Tech

The Ohio State Buckeyes add an ACC receiver to their squad for 2014. This story is from Bucknuts.com via NBC Sports

After deciding it would be best to "part ways" with Georgia Tech last December, Jeff Greene's name was briefly connected to the likes of Arkansas and Cincinnati.

Apparently, the Yellow Jackets' former leading wide receiver will instead go in another direction entirely — reportedly. According to Eleven Warriors, Greene will instead transfer to — and pay his own way through — Ohio State as a walk-on. Greene's former high school coach confirmed the move to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution later on Thursday. The decision to walk on likely comes from the fact that the Buckeyes are facing scholarship reductions from the NCAA's investigation of the program a couple of years back.

Greene will still have to sit out the 2013 season, but will be eligible to play and compete for a scholarship in 2014. He will then have two years of eligibility remaining.

Greene led all receivers at Georgia Tech as sophomore with 18 catches for 284 yards and two touchdowns.

Look who CBS thinks is the #1 team in College Football

Rank Team (Previous) Comment
1 Ohio State (4)
Overall: 12-0
Conference: 8-0
Of course there are holes. Braxton Miller has to improve as a leader and a thrower. The defense will miss John Simon. But this is the Big Ten where there isn't a serious challenger to the Buckeyes. Plus, this team is motivated after being shut out of a bowl in 2012.
2 Alabama (2)
Overall: 13-1
Conference: 8-1
They should waive the 10-year waiting period for the College Hall of Fame if AJ McCarron wins a third championship (fourth as a squad member). Nick Saban also may have had the best hiring offseason, grabbing Kevin Steele (director of player personnel) and Mario Cristobal (offensive line). Both are former head coaches.
3 Texas A&M (1)
2012: 11-2
Conference: 6-2
The Aggies beat Alabama, Oklahoma and won 11 -- and they're still peaking. With Johnny Manziel supposedly off the party circuit by two-a-days, A&M should be ready to challenge for the SEC West. Keep an eye on the Alabama game the third week of the season.
4 Stanford (3)
Overall: 12-2
Conference: 9-1
It's time to stop patting the Cardinal on the head for a nice effort. This is a program that could compete in -– and win -– the SEC. Yeah, I said it. How about 10 starters back on defense? How about a smashing running game? How about defending Pac-12 champs? Had there been a four-team playoff last season, the Cardinal would have been in the conversation.
5 Oregon (5)
Overall: 12-1
Conference: 8-1
The seamless transition to Mark Helfrich has been, well, seamless. This is still the fastest program in college football. When you see Nick Saban running hurry-up, no-huddle you know Oregon has had an influence. Watch Marcus Mariota make a serious run for the Heisman.
6 Georgia (6)
Overall: 12-2
Conference: 7-2
This is one of three teams that could win the SEC East. (The other two are below.) I happen to like the Dawgs because a) Aaron Murray is back; b) So are Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall; c) So are five starters on the offensive line; d) Georgia is motivated for a rematch after losing a heartbreaker to Alabama.
7 South Carolina (7)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 6-2
"Defensive genius" Steve Spurrier rocks on. We all get the Jadeveon Clowney phenomenon. But if the Cocks are going to win the East they're going to have to get more out of the offense. No Bama, LSU or Texas A&M on the schedule. Florida comes to Columbia.
8 Florida (8)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 7-1
First goal: Break into the top 100 in total offense. The Gators were an elite program last season and may have qualified for a four-team playoff had one been in effect. But against elite competition Florida is going to have to be more offensively efficient. Can the Gators win 11 again? Sure. Can they win the East? Ask Jeff Driskel. A lot of it is on him.
9 LSU (17)
Overall: 10-3
Conference: 6-2
There's so much news in the SEC that the Tigers were able to hide out a bit. If they're the sixth-best SEC squad (according to this poll), then watch out. Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron comes to clean up Zach Mettenberger's mistakes. D-coordinator John Chavis is solid. The running game remains strong.
10 Louisville (11)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 5-2
Let's see, how to describe Louisville's last few months. How about, fantastic? AD Tom Jurich got the Cardinals into the ACC in November. Louisville then won the Big East and embarrassed Florida in the Sugar Bowl. That good enough for ya? Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater leads a group of 16 starters. This is definitely a top 10 program on the rise with Charlie Strong in place for the foreseeable future.
11 Notre Dame (10)
Overall: 12-1
Conference: N/A
Brian Kelly no longer has to game plan around Everett Golson. The quarterback will be a difference maker this year. You know how I know? Gunner Kiel transferred (OK, what else is new), this time to Cincinnati. A lot had to go right for the Irish last season. The sense here is that they won't win six games by nine points or less. The margin for error remains thin.
12 Clemson (9)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 7-1
If it wasn't for a brutal schedule -– Georgia to open the season, at South Carolina to close it -– the Tigers might be national championship contenders. The triumvirate of ACC offensive player of the year Tajh Boyd, offensive coordinator Chad Morris and receiver Sammy Watkins should be enough for a third consecutive 10-win season.
13 Texas (NR)
Overall: 9-4
Conference: 5-4
Trying to come up with a Big 12 favorite here. Texas gets the nod because of 19 returning starters, a Big 12-friendly spread option and stability at quarterback with David Ash. The Horns have made steady progress since bottoming out at 5-7 two years ago. After the debacle in Dallas last season, 2013 will be defined by the Oklahoma game.
14 Kansas State (19)
Overall: 11-2
Conference: 8-1
It's easy to dismiss the Wildcats. Bill Snyder is another year older. Heisman finalist Collin Klein and linebacker Arthur Brown are gone. The Wildcats can't possibly duplicate a Big 12 championship season that was a national championship run all the way into mid-November, can they? Sure. Bill Snyder -– with a new five-year contract -- is one year older.
15 Oklahoma (20)
Overall: 10-3
Conference: 8-1
More Big 12 titles than anyone (eight). Great quarterback after great quarterback. Recruiting out the wazoo. Are you wondering the same thing as me: What's wrong with OU? The Sooners haven't won an outright conference title since 2010. The defense isn't on an elite level. Ten wins in '12 wasn't bad, but Bob Stoops is rededicated with a staff shakeup.

20 games in 20 days...chance to breathe

The Cincinnati Reds fell on the road yesterday to the St. Louis Cardinals, losing the series 2-1. The Reds, needless to say, are struggling on the road in 2013. The team is 3-10 away from Great American Ballpark...a 23% clip. Last season, the Reds were 47-34 on the road, a 58% clip.

The difference is hard to determine. One possible reason is the lack of offense on the road. This team is wasting great pitching performances too regularly and must continue to search for the right combination to get runs on the board more often. Another reason could be the teams they have had to play on the road so far in 2013. The Nationals, Cardinals, and Pirates have shown to be solid opponents, at least in the early. going.

The Reds are 15-14, 2 games back in the National League Central. Plenty of time remains, but you have to wonder why this team is so bad on the road. 3 games starting tomorrow with the Cubs at Wrigley could be what helps this team get going, as bad at the Cubs are, home or away. If the Reds lose this series though, you have to start wondering...why?
