ARE PLAYERS TOO IN SHAPE

Mark Schlemmer - ESPN 1410 WING

Your Reds Rookie Nick Senzel is out with a tight hamstring… what in The Hell is a tight hamstring?? Okay his leg is stiff and sore but that’s keeping him from playing? How many pitchers these days have something called oblique strains or impingements ?

Now I may be old and in fact I am but in all my days of playing I never once had any of these injuries or came out of the lineup for any reason… and I sure don’t remember Pete Rose or any of the greats sitting out unless they had a broken bone… Question is, are today’s players in too good of shape never letting their bodies rest? Most of them are as tight as a banjo string and pop at the first good fart… Spring Training is there for a reason as is Football Training Camp and NBA camps, to get players in shape but today, athletes are in shape year round… Do you ever see a fat guy pull a muscle or a hamstring? Did Babe Ruth ever have an oblique pull? Answer is no!!

Maybe today’s players are just “softer” and don’t want to play hurt because of the money or maybe the agents refuse to let them play a bit dinged… then of course you have the teams that dump millions into these coddled kids and want to protect their investment all the while costing the team a chance to win…

Hamstrings, Lats and obliques are things fat guys eat for breakfast and still never miss a game…
